Combi drivers are becoming too reckless on the road

Our combi drivers have become too adventurous on the road. They no longer see the importance of life neither do they care whether they are transporting people or sacks nor they are only concerned with meeting their targets.

The way they overtake other cars or vehicles on the road is so scary that one will think twice on whether to board a combi or a private car. When it comes to overspeeding ,the drivers seem to have a devil-may-care attitude. What Does it benefit that you kill the people in an accident and you destroy the vehicle as well?

On approaching one driver who was overtaking other cars in an inexplicable manner an elderly woman was told that," Ambuya isu tinoshanda nematargets munofunga kuti ndikaswera muroad ndinowana chii tiri pabasakaisu ende murungu haamirire izvozvo anongoda mari chete panopera zuva."

This left a lot of passengers puzzled. Does the driver care about the passengers or not , for without these passengers he wouldn't be talking of meeting targets and handing cash to the owner of the combi.

Mrs Makamba a mother of three said, "This afternoon when i was coming from town i had to shout to a certain combi driver to drop me at any near bus stop because i couldn't bear the way he was speeding. I'm a mother of three and I'm breastfeeding if i die because of an indiscreet driver who will look after my children? I'm disheartened and i think something must be done to these drivers."

Even private car drivers are not pleased with the behaviour of the combi drivers. Mr Makamba a private car driver stated that they have become so tired of reparing the damages caused by these harebrained drivers and they wish something could be done for these people are causing too many accidents on the road.

On the 8th of May 2010, A COMMUTER omnibus travelling to Murehwa, on the Harare-Mutoko Road, burst a tyre and rolled into a ditch killing three people and injuring more than a dozen others. In addition, 10 people died - six of them on the spot - when a commuter
omnibus they were travelling in overturned along the Harare-Bindura Road on the 30th of March.Nine  passengers also died when another kombi met the same
fate along the Harare-Gweru Road.

People understand that combi drivers work on targets but putting extra carefulness when transporting people is more important than anything else for life is too short to be taken for granted. Some are parents and they need to look after their children so are some kombi drivers but with a rif-rough attitude we will go nowhere.

Our brothers, fathers and everyone else who drives on the road please be extra careful with people's lives  for life is lived once on earth  thus it needs care when handling.
